Bad Breath CasesBOB Bob (not his real name) was recently retired and had been a patient in our office for 7 years. We had not previously noticed a breath problem and he had never mentioned anything. One day he called the office and complained that his wife told him that his breath had become horrible. He said that he was brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing like crazy for over 2 weeks and there was no improvement. When he came into the office I could smell his odor strongly as soon as I sat next to him. The breath-measuring device we used at that time (Halimeter) indicated a case of severe halitosis. We provided treatment at that visit and gave detailed instructions for home care, along with dispensing appropriate products. When seen a week later his problem was gone and it has not returned since (a few years).ALAN (alias) Alan had been in our practice for over 20 years and I would periodically notice some odor of his breath. He had his own business and was in charge of sales. His oral hygiene was good (he brushed regularly and flossed periodically). His wife and close family (kids can be so honest) mentioned several times that his breath smelled “foul”. Alan became more and more self-conscious of his breath and found he was “covering it up” with coffee, mints or gums before he went into sales meetings. An evaluation by the Oral Chroma machine revealed mild to moderate halitosis. Following the initial office treatment and a few days of home care Alan reported that he was “cured”. He continues to visit our office for routine dental services and he still thanks us every time he comes in. He mentioned that his confidence has grown and he no longer leans away from people when they engage in close conversation. ASHLEY (alias also) Ashley was a 16-year-old high school student whom I had never met before. She came to us because her mother was a friend with someone who works in our office and the mother was distressed about her daughter’s breath odor. Ashley’s boyfriend and family members often commented about the smell of her breath. She reported that the problem had existed for a few years and that “nothing worked”. Ashley was beginning to make possible career choices based on her continuing breath odor (I can’t work with the public when I offend everyone”) Our testing showed moderate halitosis. We treated her in the office (“My breath feels way different and better already”) and gave very specific technique training along with appropriate products and devices. After completion of treatment her mother reports that there is no more bad breath and that she is making different plans for her working future.
